You have decided you want to become a part of the highly competitive, but highly lucrative freight industry. These days whenever people decide they want to learn something new they jump on the internet and start to research. Freight broker training schools, they saturate almost all of the search page results that pop up when new aspiring brokers try to gain information on how to become a freight broker. I myself ran into this very same problem freight broker course
. But it raises the question; do you really need to go to a freight broker school to become a transportation broker?

Schools are great, if you want to learn how to run a business. This is a key part to becoming a successful broker. But realistically you could learn information on how to run a business almost anywhere. Honestly, if you do any research at all you will see that almost all the dispatching software out there is integrated with software such as quick books, or some form of it. You could learn this information in so many other places and get it for a lot cheaper than a freight broker training school! Perhaps you could grab a book from barnes and noble? Or maybe even research information online for tips and tricks of the small business.

What these schools do not teach you is how to physically use whichever software you decide to go with. This in my opinion is very vital to your success, and the best part is places like internet truck stop for example will teach you exactly how to use their software. Freight broker schools will also not give you customers; they may teach you their “method” on how to get customers, but still no guarantee to your success.

So why would you pay thousands of dollars to go to a school to attain training when you can grab maybe an inexpensive e-book, go work for a company as a freight agent and have them teach you, or take your sales background and hit the phones? The amount of money upfront you would spend to go through the school just does not make sense, because the time it would take you to earn the money back would still be 3-6 months if you really hit the phones and get new paying customers fast. There are many other paths of getting into the freight industry; however freight broker training schools just are not one I would recommend. Hopefully you have had the proper freight broker training and will be able to survive the winter season. Not only does production slow down, so does the manufacturers need for trucks. Therefore freight brokers and freight broker agents must be prepared for the slow-down period between early November and late February. This is where the trucks get paid back for charging higher rates in peak seasons. How? Because in the peak seasons, the trucks know the freight has to be moved and they also know they can get higher rates to move it. But, in the winter, the shipper knows there is less freight being shipped and they also know they can get it shipped for a lesser rate.

Why? Because the shipper knows the trucks have to keep moving in order to make a living and that a lot of them will take whatever they can get just to keep moving. As you can see, one pays in the summer and one pays in the winter. What goes around, comes around. Upon having had the proper freight broker training, you will know that this is where providing excellent Customer service will pay off. You will also know why it’s very important to remember that the trucks are your customers too. But never stop prospecting. Use this slower time to build and/or add to your shipper and carrier base, build stronger customer service relationships, consider bringing in experienced agents, plan for opening a new brokerage, get the proper freight broker training for new and inexperienced agents.
